The Consolation of Philosophy is written by Boethius, a Roman philosopher of 6th century. He compiled this book during his trial for treason and this book is considered the great prison literature. Boethius was executed after one year imprisonment by King Theodoric the Great.

This book is written in a conversational style between Boethius and Lady Philosophy who consoles him with her preaches on true happiness. Although this book looks like religious work, it is not referring to any religion though the word God is mentioned in many conversations; it is only linked to the ultimate power.

On Boethius questions of Sinners being fortunate and enjoys the happiness of power, fame, money, honor and pleasure; Lady Philosophy says none of these can make a person with true happiness. The real happiness lies in not committing sins. On a question of Sinners do not get punished, she says the real miserable is Sinners are allowed to continue committing sins; they become fortunate while they are punished.
